One Stop Cardiac Service

The Cardiac Unit at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth is proud to introduce a one-stop clinic that delves into the inner workings of the heart without the need for an invasive procedure.

Our purpose-built cardiology unit is a modern facility that specialises in a comprehensive range of heart diagnostics in a calm, relaxed environment. Our new one-stop clinic offers a same-day service, relieving the uncertainty of waiting for results and diagnosis and sparing the patient any trauma.

Head of Department Michael Peche explains further:

“The wonderful thing is that it is all non-invasive,” he says. “We are not causing any discomfort.

“It is done with a combination of the cutting edge technology we have at the Hospital and specialist diagnosis. It is as good as looking at the heart in front of you. We see what the surgeon sees but not cutting with a knife. In addition, current technology (the cardiac CT scanner) allows us to look into the coronary arteries in great detail.”

New CT Scanner

Advanced Imaging Technology

Recent research has suggested as many as 65% of invasive diagnostic procedures on patients had normal coronary arteries or mild disease, and invasive procedures could have been avoided utilising current non-invasive techniques.

“The use of dated preliminary diagnosis techniques can lead physicians into choosing invasive routes because the information they are presented with is inconclusive or inaccurate.” Our experienced team assemble the results from a number of non-invasive and advanced cardiac tests, such as 3D Echocardiography, Stress Echocardiography and Cardiac CT providing detailed, anatomical and functional data about the heart and coronary arteries.

The condition of the heart, its valves and arteries, along with the measurements that analyse their functional performance, are fed back almost instantly. The combination of effective technology and high-level specialist assessment makes The Cardiac Unit’s one-stop clinic a highly efficient service. “We can provide accurate diagnoses and optimal treatment plans without delay and non-invasively. “It is the future of cardiac diagnosis and treatment, but it is here today.”

Meet the Team

Infection Control

The risk of infection at our hospital is extremely low, due to our stringent cleaning protocol that enables us to deliver quality healthcare. Single en suite facilities are available to most patients and nurses and doctors adhere to strict hygiene procedures.

MRSA
All patients admitted are screened for MRSA. If a patient is found to be a carrier careful precautions are put in place to prevent spread of infection. Many people have concerns about MRSA infections caught in UK hospitals. Generally MRSA does not cause problems but very occasionally if MRSA gets into a surgical wound or a break in the skin of someone who is in ill-health, it can cause infection. Utmost care is taken to avoid such situations and we are proud to report that our rates of such infection are zero.

Clostridium difficile (C.diff)
C.diff is a bacteria that causes diarrhoea and other intestinal disease when competing bacteria are wiped out by antibiotics. It is the most serious cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and can lead to a severe infection of the colon. The C. difficile bacteria, which naturally reside in the body, become overpopulated: The overpopulation is harmful because the bacterium releases toxins that can cause bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea with abdominal pain, which may become severe. Often, it is cured by discontinuing the antibiotics responsible. Cases are extremely rare because of our continual monitoring of antibiotic prescriptions, private facilities and high hygiene practices..
